Horse Crazy Days

The house is silent this morning, save for the teapot clicking on the stove. The house is also cold this morning. Very cold! Too cold. I came downstairs to a thermostat reading 62 degrees, which is not ideal for a dark February morning. With any luck, the house will be warm by lunchtime. You never can be sure with old homes.

June will be up within the hour and so I write with haste to clear my mind this morning.

The first thing June will do this morning is look for her hobby horse to ride. Then, seeing her cowboy boots beside her horse, she will shove her feet (footie-pajamaed, an all) into them. She will stay this way all day, riding her horse up and down the hallway, through the kitchen and into the playroom. In her mind, she is Sherrif Callie, a character from the Disney Channel, who despite being a cat can rope and ride better than anyone or anything else. June plays the part very well.

Other than setting up barrel racing courses and making saddles, there has been a lot on my mind lately. Sean and I have begun looking out over the next year and are making some solid plans. I am always so grateful that I met someone with a heart of wanderlust as large as mine. While our plans might seem extreme or outrageous to others, to us they seem just right.

That is the beauty of having your own family, I suppose, you get to make your own path based on what is right for you, not the rest of the world.

To say that we are all ready for our trip West is an understatement. Our family does not do well in the stagnation of winter. Like so many other things, we require sunshine to grow. Every day, I am doing one project to ready us for our departure. From deep cleaning to hauling out our bin of summer clothes, there is always something to do when you are preparing to leave for six weeks. A Mama’s list is never completed, it seems.

Last week, June, who was sick with the stomach flu, for the third time this year, fell asleep on me. This hasn’t happened since she was an infant. I drained the moment dry, remembering the weight of her small body against mine, the sweat on her hairline, the rhythm she sucked her pacifier. It was everything I needed to remind me that life moves quickly… too quickly. So, we have to do what we want to do while we can.

Thank you for reading friends. What adventures are you planning this weekend? As always, you can comment below. I love reading your stories, too 😉
