Night Hike @ Pyramid Point

I left the dishes in the sink, the toys covering the living room floor and my latest sewing project spread across the dining room table. The house was a mess, but the mess would be there when we returned. The lure of sunshine on an autumn day in Michigan was too tempting to ignore. As soon as our early dinner was finished, we rushed to one of our favorite hikes at Pyramid Point, hoping to catch the sunset.

June was crabby, but we continued anyway. I had forgotten my coat, but we continued anyway. Half way up the trail we realized we had completely missed the sunset, but we continued anyway. Somtimes you just have to trust that everything will be okay once get to the top. And for us, the top of the bluff was all we needed to change everything. Looking out over the lake, June lit up. She raced down the dune, singing with joy.

We didn’t get to see the sun that evening, but we did get to stand on the dune admiring the full moon rising. It’s funny the way things work out, isn’t it? Every once in awhile, the experience you get is actually better than what you expected for yourself. We soaked in the last of the evening’s pink sky as June rode a log like a horse, then kicked her feet into the air and ran full speed up the nearest dune. Before the sky turned too dark, we yelled goodnight to the moon and began our trek back down. June led the way with her light up shoes, laughing and daring us to race her home. Which we did, of course. Some offers are too good to refuse.
